California condors roamed the skies over Grand Canyon for millennia before their species was nearly wiped out by the advance of civilization.
The condor population dropped to a few dozen birds in the 1980s before a captive breeding program allowed their numbers to bounce back into the hundreds across the Southwest and the baja peninsula in Mexico.
They were reintroduced in the Grand Canyon region in 1996, and can now be spotted from rim to river. Every condor has a numbered tag and radio transmitter for tracking by biologists tasked with monitoring their activities. This handsome bird was spotted beneath Yaki Point last night.
